SMA Burleigh to Palm Beach M1 Upgrade
Project Category
Water Treatment
Timeframe
January 2022 - March 2025
Location
Elanora, Gold Coast, QLD
Client
SMA Infrastructure
Sarjaro were engaged by SMA to provide water management solutions for this project. The contract involved the design, construction, mobilisation, setup, commissioning, operation and maintenance of two (2) bespoke multi-barrier water treatment plants to manage contaminated groundwater and surface water to enable irrigation reuse on site in accordance with the PFAS National Environmental Management Plan (NEMP) on the Burleigh to Palm Beach (B2PB) M1 upgrade. Groundwater on the project was contaminated with Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), metals nutrients and hydrocarbons due to the proximity of a Southern Gold Coast Sewerage Treatment Plant.
The B2PB project required provision of scalable storage solutions for untreated and treated water to accommodate changing dewatering requirements due to various construction activities, weather and tidal events. A portable, interconnected, and modular tank farm consisting of up to 25 x 80,000 litre tanks totalling a 2 Megalitre storage capacity provided the project with certainty to ensure uninterrupted construction dewatering activities and onsite reuse of treated water to meet regulatory compliance. Water treatment solution had to be failsafe as the site is adjacent to Tallebudgera Creek a sensitive marine ecosystem and project activities were highly
scrutinised by Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES)
