North Queensland Mid-Term Refresh (NQMTR) - PFAS Water Treatment

CPB Contractors Pty Ltd were appointed as the Managing Contractor to deliver the NQMTR program of works for the Australian Government's Department of Defence. The NQMTR project involves maintenance and upgrades at RAAF Base Townsville, the Townsville Field Training Area and HMAS Cairns, including new and upgraded engineering services, building refurbishment works, and additional accommodation. As part of the works, CPB Contractors selected Sarjaro as the water treatment subcontractor to treat contaminated water extracted from the ground during various NQMTR Civil Works projects at RAAF Base Townsville and HMAS Cairns.

Sarjaro were able to mobilise onsite quickly with pre-designed and fabricated WTPs to ensure there were no delays in the works program. The WTPs included a number of treatment technologies including:
- Lamella Plate Separator (required for the works as it was evident that a lot of sludge and silt would be delivered to the plant in combination with water)
- Zeolite Filtration
- 4 x different types of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Filtration

Sarjaro found that using the combination of granular activated carbons in this sequence provides a fail-safe to remove all chain-lengths of PFAS during both continuous treatment and batch-style treatment regimes.
